Gubernatorial Candidates Draw New Donors

This year’s candidates for governor are attracting more new donors than other gubernatorial nominees in the past decade. More than half of those who contributed to Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and former Rep. Abigail Spanberger are first-time donors to a Virginia candidate or PAC.

  • New Donors: Donors who have never given to a Virginia state candidate or PAC prior to the donations included here.
  • Lapsed Donors: Donors who last gave to a Virginia state candidate or PAC more than five years prior to the donation included here.
  • Regular Donors: Donors who have given to a Virginia state candidate or PAC in the last five years.

Notes:

Based on itemized donations reported on Sch. A (cash contributions), Sch. B (in-kind contributions of goods or services), and Sch. E (loans). Virginia only requires candidates and PACs to report itemized donations, with the names of donors, for those who give $100 or more to a candidate or PAC during an election cycle. Donations under that amount are not itemized, so it is possible that some donors listed as "lapsed" or "new" have previously given smaller donations that are not listed by name.

Includes donations to both the candidate campaign committee, and any leadership PACs controlled by the candidate.

Donations through June 30th of the year of the gubernatorial election. Only includes Democratic and Republican candidates who qualified for the November ballot.

Based on campaign finance reports filed with the Virginia Dept. of Elections. Does not include any donations to federal candidates (President, U.S. House, U.S. Senate), which are subject to different laws and are reported to the FEC.
