Years of Service in the General Assembly
November’s elections tied for the record-most incumbent losses in the House of Delegates, continuing the trend of new faces joining the General Assembly. Of the 100 delegates, 59 have served four years or fewer in the legislature. State senators have spent more time in the legislature on average, with almost half of them previously serving in the House of Delegates.
Number of Legislators by Years in the General Assembly
Notes: Includes Delegate-Elect Charlie Schmidt, and Senator-Elect Mike Jones. Special election candidates for House Districts 11, 17, and 23 are all counted as "4 or fewer", since none of the candidates on the ballot in those districts have prior General Assembly service.
Years of service includes all prior years in the Virginia General Assembly, whether in the House or the Senate.
Numbers may be less than 100 in the House, or 40 in the Senate, due to vacant seats.
