Energy Sources over Time
The source of energy produced in Virginia has shifted over time as coal has declined.
Coal production went from 768 to 283 billion BTUs from 2006 to 2023, a 63% decline. Natural gas grew from 111 to 154 billion, +39%, 18% of the total produced in 2023. The numbers reflect all fuels produced in VA including raw fuel extraction/production (before refining, processing, or electricity generation).

Notes: About EIA SEDS data. SEDS data is collected as consistently as possible but there have been changes to the way this data is collected over time. Renewables have been calculated using captured-energy method from 2022 on (Details on renewables numbers). Details on natural gas definitions. Crude oil production has been omitted because the amounts produced in Virginia are negligible.
