Democratic Candidates Running in All 100 House Districts

For the first time since VPAP began tracking elections, one political party will be represented on every Virginia legislative ballot. Democratic candidates have qualified for the November ballot in all 100 House of Delegates districts, breaking the previous record from 2021, when Republican candidates ran in 98 districts.

Since 2016, the average number of Democratic House candidates has grown more than 40%. Republicans, who previously led the number of candidates for almost two decades, have made smaller gains beginning in 2021. Meanwhile, the number of third-party and independent candidates reached a record low in 2021, and again in 2023.
