Park: UVa President Scott Beardsley is less qualified than you may think

A doctorate completed in two years. No peer-review journal articles. Lots of business experience. The CV for the new president of a regional or for-profit university? Maybe. Also the CV for the new president of the University of Virginia. Scott Beardsley’s appointment to the presidency of the University of Virginia has been turbulent, to say the least. Most coverage of Beardsley has focused on his rushed and controversial appointment, which occurred despite pleas from the governor, faculty and academic deans to hit pause.

Park is professor of education at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Bill would cut most Virginians’ power bills, while raising costs for data centers

New legislation could shift hundreds of millions of dollars of Virginia’s soaring electricity costs to data centers from the residential customers who are currently on the hook for them. The measure would cut Dominion Energy residential bills by $5.54 from a benchmark $170 monthly bill for 1,000 kilowatt-hours, an analysis by the State Corporation Commission found. That's a 3.25% decline. But it would boost bills under a new rate class for the biggest energy users — basically data centers — by 15%, the analysis found.
